Vajrastampeshwarar-Mazhuvaadeeshar Temple




Vajrastampeshwarar-Mazhuvaadeeshar Temple is situated at Thirumazhapadi near Thanjavur. The principal deity of the temple is Lord Shiva in the form of Mazhuvaadeeshar, Vajrastampeshwarar. The temple is noted for a seven tiered rajagopuram, the Somaskanda mandapa, which is a 100 pillared hall, and murals of the Nataraja shrine. There is a monolithic stone image of Somaskandar and two shrines for Dakshinamurthy. Inscriptions of Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and the Vijayanagar emperors are found in the temple. The main festival is the annual Brahmotsavam celebrated in the Masi (February-March) month. The temple is at a distance of 5 km from Thriuvaiyaru.
