Vaigai River

Vaigai River originates from the Varushanad Hills in Theni District of Tamil Nadu.

It flows through the districts of Madurai and Ramanathapuram and finally merges with Palk Strait, a 64-137 km wide channel, near Rameshwaram. The major tributaries of Vaigai are Varahanathi, Curuliyaru and Veththilai.

Madurai, the 2,500-year-old historic town, is located on the banks of the Vaigai River. Vaigai Dam is built across the Vaigai River.
