One of the two Kurangaaduturai Temples, Vada Kurangaaduturai is located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. This highly revered Shivasthalam is believed to be place where Bali had worshipped Lord Shiva. Vada Kurangaaduturai is so called because of its location to the north of the Cauvery River, at Tiruvaiyaru.
The temple enshrines Azhagu Sadaimudinaathar as the presiding deity along with his consort Azhagu Sadaimudiammai.
Vada Kurangaaduturai, administered by the Thanjavur Royal Palace, boasts a five-tiered Rajagopuram with 2 prakarams and a spacious front courtyard. Stucco figures representing legends about the temple are found in the walls. A stone image of Bali worshipping Lord Shiva decorates the sanctum. The Natarajar Sabhai shrine within the complex has the stone images of Nataraja and Shivakami.
Legend has is that, Lord Hanuman who had lost his tail at Rameshwaram got it back from Vada Kurangaaduturai.
Thanjavur Junction Railway Station is the nearest railway station. Vada Kurangaaduturai Temple can be easily reached by bus from Kumbakonam.
