Urs of Sheikh Mohammad Kasim




Urs of Sheikh Mohammad Kasim is an important ritual of the Muslims of Lakshadweep. It falls in the month of Safar of the Islam calendar. It is celebrated in honor of Sheikh Mohammad Kasim, the first Thangal of Lakshadweep. Sheikh Mohammad Kasim is considered as the twenty-ninth descendant of the Prophet. His cap, walking stick, flag are still kept in the Ujra mosque at Kavaratti Island. It is believed that the celebration of Ratheeb was started at Kavaratti under the direction of Sheikh Kasim.
