Tripura Handlooms

Handloom is a major craft of Tripura. It is a secondary source of income and employment to the tribal farmers. Almost all the tribes in the region engage in this trade.

The tribal people of Tripura weave their own clothes. Each tribe has its own peculiar motif. But common to all tribes are the vertical and horizontal stripes with multicolored embroideries.

Traditional handloom items include ‘lasingphee’ (a quilt), scarves, bed-sheets, cotton sarees and shoulder bags. Modern products like tablemats, cushion covers and canvas for holding chairs are also woven by the tribes for commercial purpose.
