Tittai Temple




Tittai is a small village en route to Melattur in Thanjavur District. The village is famous as the abode of Guru Bhagvan (Lord Dakshinamurthy). The temple is situated facing the Pasu Teertha. One has to climb the stairs in front of the hue Rajagopura of the temple and enter the first Prakaara, which has the shrine of Lord Dakshinamurthy. He appears in a standing posture, blessing the devotees in the Abhaya Hasta form. Here, he is worshipped as Raja Guru.

The presiding deity is known as Sri Dakshina Kuti Dweepa Kshetra Iswara, Swayambhootesa, Pasupathinatha (Lord of the Atman — Pasu), and Vasisteswara. The Goddess is worshipped as Akhilandeswari, Sugandhikuntaleswari and Mangaleswari. A Lingamurti is seen in the sanctum sanctorum, which receives an eternal ablution of dripping water from the Moolasthana Vimana.

It is said that Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Muruga, Lord Bhairava, Lord Surya, Lord Saneeswara, Yama, Lord Parashuram, Lord Indra, Adisesha and sages Vasistha and Jamadagni, Divine cow Kamadhenu's children — Nandini and Kamalini, and Sumali, son of Rahu, have worshipped the Swayambhumurti here.
