Tirupporur Murugan Temple is a highly revered shrine, situated at Tirupporur, about 45 km from
Chennai, in
Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 33 major temples dedicated to
Lord Muruga, in Tamil Nadu. This ancient temple which dates back to
Pallava period, enshrines a
swayambhu idol of Lord Muruga.
This temple enshrines Skanda in several forms relating to legends from the Skanda Purana. The foremost one is ‘Samhara Subramanya’, represented as a warrior. He is also depicted in the form of a child, expounding the meaning of the
Pranava mantra, ‘OM’, to his father Lord Shiva.
On the eastern side of the temple Kanda Perumal with Valli and Devayanai are enshrined on a small Peetha. A Palmyra tree and anthill can also be seen here. There is a 24-pillared hall and a 30-pillared circular hall in this temple.
The two sacred theerthams ‘Saravana Poigai and Valliyar Odai are on the southern side of the temple. Another theertham called Pranavamritam is also seen here.
