Thiruvettakudi

Thiruvettakudi is a small village in Karaikal District. It is 10 km west of Karaikal.

Among the landmark is Sri Thirumeniazhagarswamy Temple, a shrine dedicated to Sundareswarar, who is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva, and Soundarya-Nayagi, his consort. The shrines of Lord Ganesh, Surya and Chandra can also be found here.

The glory of the presiding deities of the temple has been sung by great Shaivite Saints as Tirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar.

According to a local legend, Arjuna worshipped Lord Shiva here, and Lord Shiva appeared before him in disguise of a hunter. The place got the name ‘Thiruvettakudi’ from this incident.

Karaikal Railway Station is the nearest railhead and the closest airport is at Tiruchirapalli.
