Thiruvaarpu

Thiruvaarpu is a picturesque village located about 10 km from Kottayam. This village is famous for numerous 18th century houses, mostly belonging to Iyer families.

Main attraction of the village is the Thiruvaarpu Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna. A popular legend associated with this temple is that a beautiful idol of Lord Krishna was recovered from the Vembanad Lake by the boatman of a great saint named Vilwamangalath Swamiyar. The villagers requested the saint to install this idol in the temple at Thiruvaarpu village. Thousands of devotees from every nook and corner of the region throng the temple during the main festival held in April. There is another temple also dedicated to Lord Sastha.

The famous Monkombu is within 40 km from here. Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport.
