Therazhundhur

Therazhundhur, one of the 108 Divya Desams, is 21 km from Mayiladuthurai on the road leading to Kumbakonam.

Legend has it that, a king named Uparisiravasu, after long years of penance, obtained powers to fly in his Ratha (chariot). As he was flying over this place where sage Agastya was doing penance, it came down and fell into a water source. The ratha got stuck here and the place came to be known as Therazhundur.

Therazhundhur is also the birthplace of Kamban, an eminent poet, and is also renowned for a temple with Lord Devadhirajan as the presiding deity.

The nearest railway station is at Mayiladuthurai.
