The Bhatra

Bhatras are found in Bastar and south Raipur. Pit, Amnet, and Sebhatra are the sub-divisions. Bhatras prefer animal food, liquor, and fruits. Girls have freedom to choose their husbands and to live as wife with the person they like to marry or not.

Bhatras are usually farm or household workers and they practice shifting cultivation. They are known for the liquor they make from the produce of the Mahua tree. Marriage ceremonies are performed by taking rounds of this tree. Many of their ceremonies start with hunting. This superstitious and backward group collect and sell minor forest produces but do not have the business knack for earning profit.
