Thappumelakali is a group dance mainly performed by the Paraya community of
Malappuram District. The dance is performed to the accompaniment of a small drum called thappu. A vigorous powerful dance gradually rises to a crescendo of rhythmic fervor with the dancers swirling round their feet in steps, and hands striking at perfect time.
