Tamangs




Tamangs are the largest Tibeto-Burman ethnic group. By religion the Tamangs are Lamaist Buddhists. Bara Tamang and Atharajat are the two main divisions of Tamangs. Bara Tamang is socially superior. Tamangs are similar to the Gurangs and their language is similar to the Gurang Kura. Millet, maize, wheat and barley are their traditional foods. They also make local wines called jad and raksi. Tamangs practice cross-cousin marriage.
