Suru

Suru is a famous town located at an altitude of 3,247 m above sea level in Kargil District. It is about 125 km from Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Panikhar is 75 km south of Suru.

Suru is one of the most beautiful regions of the Ladakh area. Suru is bounded by Kon Nag in the west, Kargi in the north, Parkutse in the east and Parkaryan in the south. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for town-dwellers.

The Suru Valley, formed by the Suru River, which rises from the Penzella Glacier is the prime attraction. The trek towards Suru from Drass, which passes through some of the most beautiful upland villages and flower-sprinkled meadows, is a breathtaking experience for the trekkers and mountaineers.

Suru is accessible from Kargil and Pahalgam. The nearest railhead is at Jammu, which is on the Jammu – Pathankot line and is served by the Northern Railways.
