A place with historical and religious significance, Sultanganj is situated close to the
Ganges, in
Bhagalpur District of
Bihar. Sultanganj is 28 km west of
Bhagalpur. It is from here devotees, after picking up water from the Ganges, travel a distance of about 100 km on foot to
Deoghar (
Jharkhand) to pour the holy water on Kamana Linga.
Sultanganj is popular for two granite rocks, of which one occupies a mosque. It being the abode of the sage Jahnu, Sultanganj was once a major center of learning. The ashram of Jahnu, which now enshrines the Shiva temple of Ajgaivinath, can be seen at the mid stream of the Ganges.
This place flourished during the reign of Mauryas and Guptas, as many art and architecture were introduced during these periods. A number of stupas, seals, coins, terracotta and copper images have been excavated from here. Most of these items are now housed in Patna Museum.
Sultanganj Railway Station serves the town.
