Sukrunye Festival




Most important festival celebrated by Chakhesang tribe of Nagaland, Sukrunye falls in the first month of the year and lasts for 19 days starting from Nyede to Vuta Zhongu. At present, this festival is restricted to a 6 day event. The word ‘Sukru’ means sanctification of father by performing a ritualistic ceremony and ‘Nye’ implies festival. The fifth day of this festival is called Chedi, on this day animals are killed in every household and the blood of the animals is smeared on the post of the house. The young men and women dance and sing together during this festival. Traditional games like wrestling, top fights, thuluva and more are held.
