Sudarkozhundeesar Temple




Sudarkozhundeesar Temple is located at Tiruthoonganaimadam in Cuddalore District. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva in the form of Sudarakozhundeesar. The temple spans an area of four acres including the five tiered Rajagopuram. There is a worship place for Goddess Kadanthai nayagi in the sanctum. The specialty of this temple is that it is built in the form of an elephant with windows on the three sides. Inscriptions from the Chola period are preserved here. Pennai is the temple teertham. Sambandar and Appar have contributed pathigams in praise of Sudarkozhundeesar. The annual festival is celebrated in the month of Chittirai (April-May). Other festivals celebrated include Kartikai Deepam, Skanda Sashti, Arudra Darisanam, Thaipusam, Sankaranti, Pankuni Uthiram and Aadi Pooram. The nearest railway station is at Pennadam which is 18 km south-west of Vriddhachalam.
