St James Church

St James Church is the oldest church in the capital and has been built by James Skinner in 1836. The dome of the church is very similar to the dome of the Florence Cathedral in Italy, the first renaissance structure built in the world. Its entrance faces west and the altar towards east. Designed in cruciform plan, the central portion of the church is an octagon with circular columns. The architecture of the church reflects the western classical design with a Greek cross plan. During the mutiny of 1857 the church was damaged, but the British restored it to the former shape.
