Sri Sarguneswaraswamy Temple

Sri Sarguneswaraswamy Temple is at Karuveli village in Tiruvarur District. Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Sarguneswarar and his consort is Goddess Sarvanganayagi.

Built during the Chola period, the temple has an imposing structure of Goddess Sarvanganayaki who is five and a half feet tall. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati was returning from the yagam conducted by Dakshan. She wanted to impress the Lord as she had gone to the Dakshayagam against his wishes. Hence she acquired all the beauty in the world and took the form of Sarvangasundari and appeared before Sri Sarguneswaraswamy.

The temple has beautiful idols of Arthanareeswarar, Lord Dakshinamurthy, Lord Brahma, Durga and Bhairavar. A few inscriptions are also seen. A tank called Yama Theertham is found in front of the temple.
