Sree Vaikathappan Temple

Sree Vaikathappan Temple, also known as Puthiyathrikovu temple, is located at Chendamangalam, north Paravoor Town, in Aluva. Lord Shiva is the main deity worshipped here.

There is an interesting history behind this temple. The story says that Paliath Achan used to visit the famous Vaikom Mahadevar Temple every last day of a month and the first day of the next month. During one of his visits, he felt that he might not be able to visit the temple again due to his failing health.

On returning home, he had a bath in a pond near his house (which is now the temple pond), after keeping his umbrella on the banks of the pond. After his bath he found that he could not lift his umbrella from the ground on account of some divine force resisting it. The astrologers who were consulted, concluded that the divine force was the Lord of Vaikom. To commemorate this, Sree Vaikathappan Temple, also known as Puthiyathrikovu temple, was built at that place.

Shivratri, Vaikathashtami and Vettekkaran pattu are the three main festivals celebrated at this temple.

Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery, 10 km from Aluva, is the nearest airport. The nearest railhead is at Aluva, which is 20 km from Chendamangalam. Regular bus services are available from Aluva to North Paravoor.
