Siriaayana

Siri Festival

Siriaayana is celebrated in the month of 'Chitra' ('Paggu') relating to the month of April on full moon day. It is celebrated in many places of Udupi(Hiriyadaka)and Mangalore(Kabataru) at Mahalingeshvara temple. This festival is generally a full night ritual and a festival of mass trance of women folk. According to Siri(daughter of Lord Bermeru, believed to have strong power of transformation) myth, during the ritual the women go in to the trance by singing 'paaDdhana'(Tulu folk songs) known as 'Siri Sandhi'. Some times 'Kumara' (male impersonator and son of Siri), a mediator of Siri possesser acts as a faith healer and sings the long epic. Due to strong power of Siri women consider it as honour to be possessed by "Siri", which is a kind of faith healing. Women or "Kumara' never sings a lengthy epic during the ritual. Only few dozens of the Siri epic phrases are sung.
