Sibsagar, on the bank of the Dikhu River, is the headquarters of
Sibsagar District,
Assam. Situated 369 km east of
Guwahati, it was an ancient capital of
Ahoms who ruled Assam nearly six hundred years. Sibsagar is famous for three ancient temples on the bank of
Sibsagar tank in the middle of the city: Shivadol, Vishnudol and Devidol. The Shivadol is one of the highest temples in India dedicated to
Lord Shiva.
Sibsagar is also an important center for tea and oil industries. It is a fast developing town in commercial, industrial and educational activities.
There are several worship places and historical monuments in and around Sibsagar such as Vaishvava satras, Buddhist and Shakta shrines, more than 500 tanks, Muslim Dargaha, forts and castles belonging to the Ahom dynasty. Kareng Ghar and Talatal Ghar, Jayasagar Tank,
Gauri Sagar Tank, Rudra Sagar Tank, Charaideo, and Ajan Pir Dargah Shariff are some of them.
Jorhat Airport (55 km) is the nearest airport. Nearest railhead is at
Simaluguri, 16 km away. National Highway 37 passes through Sibsagar. There are direct buses from Guwahati and other important towns.
