Shravasti District




The district of Shravasti lies on the north-eastern side of Uttar Pradesh. It was formed out of Gonda and Bahraich districts. At present, Shravasti covers an area of 2,186 sq km, comprising two tehsils and six development blocks with a population over 1.1 million. The Rapti is the major river. The headquarters, Shravasti, is located about 150 km away from Lucknow.

Shravasti is a holy place for both Buddhists and Jains. In early times, it was known as Mahid or Sahet-Mahet. Sobhanath temple situated here is believed to be the birthplace of Jain Tirthankar Sambhavnath.
