Shang Basket




Shang is a basket used by shopkeepers belonging to the Jaintia tribe of Meghalaya, to store and display their wares. It is woven with bamboo splits and has a square base with sides reaching out to a circular rim.

The base measures diagonally 240 mm, while the rim has a diameter of 430 mm. The base, woven with the twill weave, is divided into 4 equal sections. The sides, woven in a spiral fashion, contain a herringbone pattern along the center.
