Saunk

Saunk, also spelt Sonkh, is a 2,500 year old town in Mathura District. The excavations at this place have unfolded a cultural continuity from the 1st millennium B C to the 9th century. The site yielded several rare collections of terracottas and sculptures of the Kushana Empire. Saunk is around 32 km from Mathura and 64 km from Agra on the way to Govardhan, before Maghora. Mathura Junction Railway Station and Agra Civil Enclaves are the nearest railway station and airport. A prior permission has to be obtained from the Director, Government Museum, Mathura, to visit this place.
