Sati Pillars

Sati Pillars or stones were also called Mahasati stones. These were erected to honour the women who committed sati and are commonly found in western, southern and central India.

The image of the woman is carved on the slab. She is depicted with hands folded in front in an anjali mudra, which is how a widow sits on the funeral pyre. The practice of sati is glorified in such stones and the women are given the status of heroes.
