Saradamoni Debi

also called Sarada Devi



Saradamoni is highly revered as a saintly mother all over the country. She taught the Bengalis to lay stress on their theological and spiritual roots.

Born on 22nd Dec 1853, Saradhamoni was married to Ramakrishna, the Guru of Swami Vivekananda, at the age of 6. When she was 19, Saradamoni had her first vision of the Goddess Kali, who told her to join Ramakrishna at Dakkhineshwar in Kolkata. She moved to Kolkata and joined Ramakrishna in preaching universal brotherhood. Ramakrishna noted the spiritual powers latent in her and worshipped her like a goddess. After Ramakrishna's death in 1886, Saradamoni preached the teachings of Ramakrishna along with her own practical philosophy. In 1901 she started the Durga puja in Belur Math. She attained the status of the divine mother. She passed away on 21st July 1920.
