Rang

Rang is a musical instrument, similar to Gong, used by the Garo tribe of Meghalaya. Apart from its usual function as a musical instrument, it has great significance in the Garo society. A man’s wealth and social status is indicated by the number of Rangs he has. In the event of a Nokma’s (chieftain) death, his body is rested on rows of Rangs before the cremation. In case a person has to pay a penalty, he is asked to do so in terms of Rangs. The value of a Rang increases with its age.
