Rammanohar Lohia was born at
Faizabad District in
Uttar Pradesh on March 23rd, 1910. He was a socialist leader who was introduced to the Indian freedom struggle at an early age by his father, Hari Lal. Once he got a chance to attend a meeting with
Gandhiji. Gandhiji’s spiritual power and self-control deeply influenced him. In 1918, Lohia organized a student protest to work against the Simon Commission, which comprised only members of the British Parliament.
Lohia completed his intermediate course from the
Banaras Hindu University and graduated from the Calcutta University. Then he joined the Berlin University of Germany to complete higher studies. At that time, he attended the League of Nations assembly in Geneva. Later he became the general secretary of the Praja Socialist Party. To meet farmers’ everyday problems, he organized the Hind Kisan Panchayat.
Lohia went to jail several times both before and after freedom for the sake of the people. His effort was to ensure justice to all, especially the backward groups and women. When he passed away on October 12, 1967, he left behind no bank balance or other valuable assets but only prudent contemplations.
