Ramakuthu

Ramakuthu is a tribal dance form performed by Irulas, the second largest tribe of Kerala. The theme for this dance form is taken from the great Indian epic Ramayana. This dance performance lasts for seven days.

The performers in Ramakuthu present the characters from the epic such as Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Lord Hanuman. The costumes of the performers are similar to that of Kathakali performers. During the performance, musicians play Harmonium and drums.

The joker, who is not in the Ramayana, an additional character in this art form makes this event lively. At the conclusion of Ramakuthu, the audience makes offering to the characters who played as the deities.
