Puppetry

Puppetry is an ancient folk drama of Punjab. The show is always conducted in night to generate the atmosphere suitable for the story being performed. The stage setting is very simple with two or three bare cots arranged. The puppets are dressed colorfully based on the character. The string holding the puppet is very thin and is almost invisible.

Usually the puppets present the role of Rajput folk heroes. The complete control of the puppet will be in the hands of the puppeteer. He makes the puppet to mimic human behaviors such as dancing, fighting, and other acts. The voices for the puppets are also given by the puppeteer. He uses a pipni, an improvised bamboo gadget, in the mouth for generating the various sounds.
