Poovanathar Temple




Poovanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This Shivasthalam is located at Tiruppoovanam in Madurai District. The lord is also known as Bhaskarapureeswarar. There is a worship place for Goddess Minnanaiallammai. Covering an area of three acres, the temple has a 75 feet high Rajagopuram. The temple teertham is Vaigai. Myth is that Surya, the sun god, had worshipped Somaskandar here. The main festival is the annual Brahmotsavam falls in the month of Panguni (mid February–mid March). Other festivals are Aadi Pooram, Navratri, Arudra Darisanam, Krithika Deepam and the Kolattam festival (Aippasi). The nearest railhead is at Tiruppoovanam, 19 km east of Madurai.
