Poonjar




Poonjar is a town situated in the Meenachil taluk of Kottayam District and rests on the basin formed by the Vembanad Lake. Kottayam town is 45 km from Poonjar.

The Poonjar Palace located here is a testimony to the reign of the erstwhile kingdom of Poonjar. Another place of importance is the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple, which is an exact replica of the famous Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. The Sastha Temple, located here, is famous for the rare ‘Chuttuvilakku’ (row of lamps) engraved on its stonewalls.

Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport. Kottayam Railway Station is the nearby railhead.
