Patidar Community

The Patidar, now called Patel, is an agricultural community in Gujarat. The word ‘Patidar’ is still used as the surname for the members of the Patel community in Kheda district of Central Gujarat. Patel, Desai, and Amin are the other surnames of this community. The Patidars in Gujarat have four sub divisions-the Kadavas, the Leuas, the Matis and the Anjanas. Chullias are another section of Patidars in the state. The Patels in North Gujarat are also called ‘Kanabis’. Marriage is the most important event of this community. The dowry system still exists among them. Because of this evil custom, the birth of a girl is considered as a source of sadness even today. More over large sums are spent in connection with the marriage for dinner, gaiety and pomp.

Nowadays, Patidar is the most prosperous community among Hindus. The famous personalities from this community include Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Vitthalbhai Patel (brother of Sardar Patel), Ishwar Petalikar, Raghuvir Chaudhary and Pannalal Patel.
