Paataleswarar Temple




Paataleswarar Temple is located at Aradaiperumpaazhi in Thanjavur District. The place is also known as Sameevanam. The temple, spanning an area of two acre, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is a separate sanctum for Goddess Alankara Nayaki. The speciality of the temple is that there is a covered pit in front of the shrine. It is believed that this pit was dug by Vishnu in his Varaaha Avataram. The sthala Vriksham (sacred tree) is Vanni and the teertham is Bhrama Theertham. Sage Sambandar is said to have contributed pathigams in favour of the lord. The main festivals are Karthikai Deepam, Chitra Pournami and Pankuni Uthiram. Tourists can reach the temple by getting down at Saaliyamangalam, the nearest railway station on the Tiruvarur Thanjavur railroad.
