Oppiliappan Temple

Oppiliappan Temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams, is located about 5 km from Kumbakonam, in Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity here is Lord Vishnu, locally known as ‘Oppiliappan’, enshrined in a standing posture facing east, flanked by Goddess Bhoomi Devi and sage Markandeya.

The remarkable feature of this temple is that salt is never used in the food offered for worship.

The temple houses a beautiful image of Lord Krishna as a child. Namm Alwar, Thirumangai Alwar, Poigai Alwar and Pei Alwar have sung in the temple in praise of the lord.

Thousands of devotees throng the temple during the annual Brahmotsavams, celebrated in the months of March/April and September/October. Vasantotsavam, in 'Vaikasi' (May-June), and the Tirukkalyanam, in 'Aippasi' (October-November) are the other major festivals celebrated with much religious fervour.
