Omkareswara Temple

Dedicated to Shiva, Omkareswara Temple was built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra. It is a mix of Gothic and Islamic style of architecture and built around a central pool. There is a tank in front of the temple and a footpath leading to a small ‘mandap’.

There is a story behind the temple. It is said that, to fulfill his political ambitions, Lingarajendra killed an honest and pious brahmin. That brahmin became a ‘Brahmarakshas’. He started to trouble the king. When the king brought a shivling from Kasi and installed it in a temple, the ‘Brahmarakshas’ left the king.

Regular rituals were performed and the shivling was named ‘Omkareswara’. The bars of the windows of the temple are made of 'panchaloha'. Four minars have been built at the four corners of the temple. The central minar is in the shape of a globe.
