Nilgiri Mountain Railways




Included in the list of world heritage sites, the Nilgiri Mountain Railways is a unique feat of engineering. The 46 km long meter gauge railway line connects Mettupalayam and Ooty. It lies partly in Coimbatore District and partly in Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadu. Nilgiri Mountain Railways was opened to the public in 1899.

Nilgiri Mountain Railways is the steepest mountain railway in Asia. A unique rack system and complicated locomotives are the notable features of the rail system. The 100-year-old Ooty Toy Train, winding 16 tunnels and tall girder bridges, offers an enchanting experience.

To sum up, Nilgiri Mountain Railways is the most outstanding example of hill passenger railway in India.
