Neelamperoor Patayani

Neelamperoor Patayani is the festival held at Palli Bhagavathy Temple in Neelamperoor of Kottayam District. The temple is about 16 km from Kottayam. The festivities occur during the month of September.

The Patayani is the main attraction of the festival. There is a 'Thothakali,’ a rhythmic dance in accordance with songs from the folklore and the beating of the drums. This is conducted in a peculiar way. The devotees arrange themselves in a circle and a big fire at the center. They dance and twirl small clothes in an artistic pattern. Huge crowds flock from across the states to the shrine during the festive time. The display of the 'Big Swan,' which is about 45 ft high, attracts everyone. There are other swans and fully decorated effigies to enhance the beauty of the scene.
