National Rail Museum

National Rail Museum (NRM), formerly known as the Rail Transport Museum, is the first of its kind in the country and is one amongst the finest Rail Museums in the world. Inaugurated in 1977, it presents an interesting portrayal of the information regarding the history of railways in India. The NRM is situated at Chanakyapuri, Delhi.

Spread over an area of 10 acres, the museum comprises of a majestically designed octagonal building with nine display galleries and a large open area laid out to simulate a Railway Yard. The indoor gallery of the museum displays various small exhibits, working and dummy models, coat of arms, records, historical documents and photographs. The museum features about 100 real size exhibits representing the glory of the bygone era.

National Rail Museum’s main attraction is the majestic Fairy Queen, India’s first train that made its journey from Mumbai to Thane, which rolled out for the formerly East Indian Railway in 1855.

NRM runs a toy train around its grounds for an enjoyable ride on regular days. Occasionally, the Old Patiala State Steam Monorail is steamed up and runs on the rail track around the museum.
