Nasir-ud-din Mahmud was crowned the Sultan of
by the Amirs and Maliks owing to the inability of Sultan Masud Shah, the nephew of Razia Sultan
. He was the youngest son of IItutmish
, and ruled Delhi for over 25 years.
The Sultan spent most of his time in prayers, and his minister and father-in-law, Ghiyas-ud-din Balban , controlled the country. After Mahmudís death in 1266, the power was taken over by Balban, who in turn was an able administrator.
