Narmada Udgam, the source of the sacred Narmada River
, is situated at Amarkantak
in the Shahdol District
of Madhya Pradesh
. It is one of the holiest places in India. There is a temple dedicated to the goddess Narmada. The temple houses a black basalt stone idol of Narmada. Mahashivaratri
and Nagarpanchami are celebrated here annually.
Ruins of several ancient temples can be seen here. Kapildhara and
waterfalls are about 12 km away.
