Nagra

Nagra is a large drum used by the Garo tribe belonging to Meghalaya. This drum has a special significance. It is used for announcing an important event in the Nokma’s (chieftain) house. The beating of this drum indicates that the people are invited to the chieftain’s home for that particular occasion.

Nagra can be beaten only by its owner or his relatives. It is a common belief among the tribe that the drum should not be taken out the chieftain’s house. It is considered a bad omen if done so.
