Muthupet Mangrove Forest




Spread over an area of 6800 hectares, Muthupet Mangrove Forest is located at the southern end of the Cauvery Delta, near Muthupet. It is locally known as Alayathi Kadu.

Muthupet’s wetlands are associated with the coastal wet lands of Vedaranyam. The swamp is characterized by the presence four species of exclusive mangroves namely Avicenna marina, Excoecaria agallocha, Aegiceras corniculatum and Acanthus ilicifolius.

This mangrove forest attracts seasonal migratory birds such as flamingos from far off countries such as Siberia, Australia, Russia and Europe in the monsoon season. Aquatic fauna include juvenile and adults of finfishes, shrimps, mollusks, crabs and benthic invertebrates.
