Mukhimath Temple

Mukhimath Temple is situated near Dharali in Uttarkashi District. It is also called Mukhwa. At the onset of winter on the Diwali day, the idol of Goddess Ganga - from the famous Gangotri Temple - is shifted to this shrine. At this time, Gangotri Temple closes down due to snowfall and a drastic drop in temperature. The idol of Ganga is worshipped here for six months, till the temple reopens. In summer, the idol is taken back to the Gangotri Temple in a procession with a lot of pomp and show. Ganges flows near the shrine. Snow-clad peaks act as backdrop to the temple. Tapovan, Gangotri, Vasuki Tal and Chirbasa are nearby destinations. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport. The nearest railway station is at Rishikesh.
