Muhammad Ghori

Recorded history about Muhammad Ghori begins with his appointment as the Governor of Ghazni in AD 1174. He is also referred as Shahabuddin Muhammad Ghori and Muiz Uddin Muhammad Sam.

The first campaign of Muhammad Ghori in Indian Subcontinent was the successful capture of Multan in AD 1175. But his next campaign against the Raja of Gujarat in AD 1178 met with failure. In AD 1181, he occupied the Sialkot fortress and soon routed the Ghaznavids. This opened the way for further conquest of India.

But soon the had to face the might of Rajputs in the form of Prithviraj Chauhan. In the first Battle of Tarrain Muhammad Ghori was captured and pardoned by Prithviraj. Next year he returned and this time success smiled on him and he defeated Prithviraj Chauhan and laid the foundation of Muslim domain in North India.

His brother Ghiyasuddin died in AD 1203 and he became the king of Ghori, Ghazni and India. In AD 1206, he was murdered by the Ghokars.
