Moyon Tribe

Moyon Tribe inhabit the southeastern part of Manipur, especially the Chandel District. Their name is derived from a village, Moyon Khullen, also known as Bujuur. It is believed that, their origin was from a cave located at Sijjur or from another cave named Khur or Khul. Marriages are done by negotiation (luhong) or elopement (itaen). Sachii ichii (sowing festival) and Buren Iimpeh (harvest festival) are the main festivals.

Every village has one primary school and the tribe gives importance to education. They use the Meiteilon ( Manipuri) language very well. The women of Moyon have their own organization formed in 1950, to improve the social status. A Moyon woman became the speaker of the Legislative Assembly in 1997, for the first time. Only the Moyon tribe has the right to vote in the Legislative Councils.
