Moatsu Mong

Moatsu Mong is one of the important festivals of the Aos community, in Chuchuyimlang of Nagaland. Celebrated with traditional jollity, this spring festival is held after the sowing is done. It usually falls in May and lasts for six days.

During the festival, various rituals are performed and the weather god is worshipped for a bounteous harvest. Aos invite friends and relatives from other villages and exchange gifts to renew traditional friendship. Folk dances, songs, indigenous games and tribal chants are the major accompaniments of this festival.

One of the symbolic celebrations of this festival is 'Sangpangtu', during which a big fire is lit and the villagers sing and dance around it. Food and drinks are served on this occasion. In early times, brisk competitions were held to make the best rice-beer and rear the best possible animals such as pigs, cows and fowls.
