Mindrolling Monastery




Mindrolling Monastery is a magnificent Buddhist shrine situated at Clement Town, in Dehradun District of Uttaranchal. Founded by Ogyen Terdag Lingpa, also known as Rigzin Gyurme Dorji, the monastery practices Nyingmapa tradition, the ancient tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

Situated at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas, the monastery is one of the largest Buddhist centers in India. The monastery offers Buddhist education for over 300 monks beginning with primary and secondary school. It also facilitates research and preserves and promotes Buddhism and Tibetan culture.

Mindrolling Monastery is an outstanding example for Buddhist art and architecture. Daily prayers are conducted at the main monastery and practice center named Ngedon Gatsal Ling. The great stupa housed in the monastery is one of the world's largest stupa and is 185 ft tall and 100 square ft in width. There are several large prayer wheels on the grounds surrounding the Stupa for use by monks and laity. The huge statue of standing Buddha, housed in the Buddha garden, is an eye catching one.

Dehradun Railway Station is the nearest railhead (11 km). Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport.
