Metal Encrusting in Tamil Nadu

Metal encrusting technique of Tamil Nadu involves three kinds of artisans. The first is a metalworker who cuts and polishes a copper plate according to the required size. This plate is referred to as ‘os.’ The second person is a jeweler, who prepares the designs on the plate. It is first heated on a bed of asphalt and then the designs are traced on it. The designs are elevated by punching on the reverse side. Etching and cutting are also employed to enhance the designs. The third person required is the stone setter, who encrusts the patterns with gold or silver.

These plates depict scenes from various epics and mythologies. Some images also contain plants and animals. This method is used in Tamil Nadu only.
